The Dutch bucket method uses individual buckets filled with a growing medium instead of one large grow bed. This design provides better root support, improved moisture retention, and the freedom to grow a wide range of bigger crops — one of the key reasons it’s become such a popular hydroponics choice for both beginners and experienced growers.

How the Dutch Bucket Method Works

Each bucket is filled with a suitable growing medium such as vermiculite. This medium provides structure, holds moisture, and keeps plants upright.

A reservoir pumps nutrient-rich water through a main line that feeds drip emitters positioned above each bucket. As the system runs, every plant receives a steady supply of nutrients. When the water reaches the correct level, the drain pipe automatically removes the excess solution, preventing overwatering and ensuring healthy root development.
